AlphaBeta@OmegaPhiBeta.org Alpha Beta chapter’s Softball Tournament “A League of Their Own” New York, NY...August 22, 2017 -On Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Van Cortlandt Park, the Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. had their first annual Softball Tournament, “A League of Their Own.” Over 100 people attended and participated in the softball games, which helped Alpha Beta raise over $1,300 for their partner organization and official beneficiary, The Violence Intervention Program, Inc. (VIP Mujeres). VIP Mujeres is a community based non-profit organization dedicated to the eradication of domestic and intimate partner violence. The round-robin style tournament had seven teams, (The Bronx Outlaws, K.A.O.S. Heavy Hitters, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Alcobalics, The Sigmas, and The Catching Fires). The games lasted seven hours and The Bronx Outlaws prevailed with a score of 12-2 against the Heavy Hitters. The Bronx Outlaws were not the only winners of the day. Three raffle ticket winners won $75 and $50 gift cards to Havana Central thanks to one of our donors and another person won two tickets to Alpha Beta’s annual semi-formal cocktail party/fundraiser, E.N.C.A.N.T.O, which is slated to be held on October 14, 2017 at Inwood Bar and Grill. Kelly Guajardo, VIP’s Communications and Policy Manager attended the event alongside other staff members of VIP, including their Executive Director, Cecilia Gaston and stated that, “OPBSI expertly leverages their network to both increase awareness around domestic violence and raise money for the life-saving services organizations such as VIP provide to survivors. It was beautiful to see so many men, women, and even children up early on Saturday morning to play softball for a meaningful cause. We are endlessly grateful for our partnership with OPBSI’s Alpha Beta Chapter—true champions in the movement to end domestic violence.” The Alpha Beta Chapter is extremely thankful to everyone who supported this fundraiser and looks forward to hosting this event again next year. Congratulations to the 2017 Champions of “A League of Their Own” Co-ed Softball Tournament: The Bronx Outlaws! New York, NY...August 17, 2017 - – The Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is pleased to announce the second annual recipient of the Child of the Universe Scholarship (COTUS), J.P. (name withheld for privacy). The Child of the Universe Scholarship aims to provide financial help to an outstanding immigrant woman pursuing a higher education who may not qualify for financial aid due to her immigration status. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated believes in empowering women and the right to a free education, which led to the creation of the Child of the Universe Scholarship. J.P., was born in a little town in Puebla, Mexico. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was only 13 years old. Since arriving to the country, J.P. has faced many challenges which she has used to fueled her dedication and has inspired her to work with organizations that support and improve the lives of undocumented people in New York City. J.P. currently works facilitating a program at Atlas DIY called “Wall of Hope” which seeks to empower immigrant youth through their stories of struggle and sacrifice as a foundation of empowerment and reflection. She is also part of the Immigrant Youth Peer Education Program (IYPEP). This program seeks to create a young-led immigrant justice movement in NYC. She also is an intern at the Educational Opportunities Initiative at the Mexican Consulate, where she provides the community bilingual information on educational pathways and services. Due to J.P.’s immigration status, paying for college is a constant struggle as she does not qualify for federal or state financial aid. Unfortunately, J.P. does not qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (D.A.C.A.) either, which limits her options to apply for scholarships. Thanks to COTUS, she will be able to pay for another semester, which it means she is closer to one of her dreams of pursuing a B.S in Health and Nutrition Science at Brooklyn College followed by pursuing a Masters in Community Health Education. Once J.P. graduates she hopes to become a therapist focusing on health issues such as obesity and diabetes as a way of giving back to her community. Cynthia Lopez, President of the Alpha Beta Chapter of OPBSI said, “The women of the NYC Alumnae Chapter are very excited and proud to be able to plant a little hope in a young woman’s pursuit of her dreams. As a chapter we hope to continue fostering women’s empowerment in our communities through COTUS. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to our ability to provide an opportunity to leave behind this legacy."
