Announced as the Winner of the Child of The Universe Scholarship New York, NY...August 26, 2016 – The Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is proud to announce J.G. (name withheld for privacy). as the winner of the first Child of the Universe Scholarship. The scholarship, in collaboration with Atlas: DIY, provides $500 to a highly motivated undocumented high school graduate in an effort to assist with the costs associated with pursuing a college education. There are approximately 65,000 undocumented students who graduate from high school every school year across the country. Due to their immigration status, they are not eligible for Federal nor State financial aid, which cause a burden in achieving a higher education degree. The sisters of Alpha Beta Chapter believe that the cost of an education should not hinder students, regardless of their immigration status, from achieving their goals. J.G., a young Ecuadorian immigrant who will be attending the Borough of Manhattan College (BMCC) this fall majoring in Journalism and Communications and has been active with Atlas: DIY throughout her high school career. She has assisted in teaching others about workers’ rights, forms of immigration relief, student rights and immigration history. She is also a member of the organizations’ DACA Squad, where she assists members of her community in completing immigration applications such as DACA renewals and citizenship applications. “If I change my own mentality with the goal to understand people better, I am able to advocate for them.” Atlas: DIY Powered by Immigrant Youth, is creating a world powered by the joy, freedom, and endless possibility of all youth everywhere. We do this by working with immigrant youth to unlock access to legal services, learning opportunities and leadership development, in a space owned, run and governed by the youth themselves.
