New York, NY...August 17, 2017 - – The Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated is pleased to announce the second annual recipient of the Child of the Universe Scholarship (COTUS), J.P. (name withheld for privacy). The Child of the Universe Scholarship aims to provide financial help to an outstanding immigrant woman pursuing a higher education who may not qualify for financial aid due to her immigration status. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated believes in empowering women and the right to a free education, which led to the creation of the Child of the Universe Scholarship. J.P., was born in a little town in Puebla, Mexico. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was only 13 years old. Since arriving to the country, J.P. has faced many challenges which she has used to fueled her dedication and has inspired her to work with organizations that support and improve the lives of undocumented people in New York City. J.P. currently works facilitating a program at Atlas DIY called “Wall of Hope” which seeks to empower immigrant youth through their stories of struggle and sacrifice as a foundation of empowerment and reflection. She is also part of the Immigrant Youth Peer Education Program (IYPEP). This program seeks to create a young-led immigrant justice movement in NYC. She also is an intern at the Educational Opportunities Initiative at the Mexican Consulate, where she provides the community bilingual information on educational pathways and services. Due to J.P.’s immigration status, paying for college is a constant struggle as she does not qualify for federal or state financial aid. Unfortunately, J.P. does not qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (D.A.C.A.) either, which limits her options to apply for scholarships. Thanks to COTUS, she will be able to pay for another semester, which it means she is closer to one of her dreams of pursuing a B.S in Health and Nutrition Science at Brooklyn College followed by pursuing a Masters in Community Health Education. Once J.P. graduates she hopes to become a therapist focusing on health issues such as obesity and diabetes as a way of giving back to her community. Cynthia Lopez, President of the Alpha Beta Chapter of OPBSI said, “The women of the NYC Alumnae Chapter are very excited and proud to be able to plant a little hope in a young woman’s pursuit of her dreams. As a chapter we hope to continue fostering women’s empowerment in our communities through COTUS. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to our ability to provide an opportunity to leave behind this legacy." AlphaBeta@OmegaPhiBeta.org For Immediate Release: August 26, 2016 J.G. Announced as the Winner of the Child of The Universe Scholarship New York, NY...August 26, 2016 – The Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is proud to announce J.G. (name withheld for privacy). as the winner of the first Child of the Universe Scholarship. The scholarship, in collaboration with Atlas: DIY, provides $500 to a highly motivated undocumented high school graduate in an effort to assist with the costs associated with pursuing a college education. There are approximately 65,000 undocumented students who graduate from high school every school year across the country. Due to their immigration status, they are not eligible for Federal nor State financial aid, which cause a burden in achieving a higher education degree. The sisters of Alpha Beta Chapter believe that the cost of an education should not hinder students, regardless of their immigration status, from achieving their goals. J.G., a young Ecuadorian immigrant who will be attending the Borough of Manhattan College (BMCC) this fall majoring in Journalism and Communications and has been active with Atlas: DIY throughout her high school career. She has assisted in teaching others about workers’ rights, forms of immigration relief, student rights and immigration history. She is also a member of the organizations’ DACA Squad, where she assists members of her community in completing immigration applications such as DACA renewals and citizenship applications. “If I change my own mentality with the goal to understand people better, I am able to advocate for them.” Atlas: DIY Powered by Immigrant Youth, is creating a world powered by the joy, freedom, and endless possibility of all youth everywhere. We do this by working with immigrant youth to unlock access to legal services, learning opportunities and leadership development, in a space owned, run and governed by the youth themselves.
